HVAC Contractor in Weatherford, TX
Welcome to Weatherford, Texas! Weatherford, the county seat of Parker County, is located at the intersection of U.S. Highways 180 and 80, approximately thirty miles west of Fort Worth in the center of the county. Interstate 20 runs along the southern edge of the city, and several Farm Roads, including 920, 2421, 51, 1884, and State Highway 171, also serve the area.
Weatherford History
Parker County held an election to determine the site for its county seat. Of the three eligible locations, the current site was chosen and named Weatherford in honor of Jefferson Weatherford, a member of the Texas Senate who co-authored the bill establishing the county. Situated on the divide between the Trinity and Brazos valleys, Weatherford was the primary frontier settlement in North Texas for its first decade.
The town was incorporated in 1858, and a post office opened in 1859. As the new county seat, Weatherford was midway on the stagecoach route between Fort Worth and Fort Belknap. For the first twenty-five years, Weatherford served not only as the county seat but also as a refuge for Parker County residents during a series of Indian raids that continued until the early 1870s. Once the threat of these attacks diminished, the city began to prosper.
In 1880, the Texas and Pacific Railway’s tracks reached Weatherford, and seven years later, the Santa Fe line entered the city limits. In 1891, the local Weatherford, Mineral Wells, and Northwestern Railway began operations.
Weatherford: A Popular Place to Live
By the mid-1890s, Weatherford had an estimated population of 5,000 and was home to 100 businesses, seven churches, several schools, three banks, four hotels, three weekly newspapers (the Weatherford Sun, the Weatherford Constitution, and the Parker County News), and one institution of higher learning, Weatherford College.
Throughout the twentieth century, Weatherford remained the agricultural business center of Parker County. During the 1920s, new businesses, including those producing oilfield equipment and furniture, were established. The city had over 400 companies with manufacturing plants producing oilfield equipment, rubber, and plastic products.
The addition of U.S. Highways 180 and 80, along with several Farm Roads built during the 1950s, helped maintain Weatherford’s status as an essential retail and shipping hub for North Texas farmers and ranchers. Since 1900, watermelon has become the primary agricultural product cultivated in the Weatherford area. In the 1960s, Weatherford Junior College expanded, and Weatherford Lake, located just outside the city limits, became a popular recreational destination.
The First Monday Fair is held on the first Monday of each month. This event evolved from a trading day when the court was in session, allowing farmers and ranchers to bring their produce and livestock to town for sale. Today, the fair features a flea market, along with produce and livestock sales. By 2000, Weatherford’s population had grown to 19,000, with 1,614 businesses operating within the city.
In the early 1920s, Ray Morrison, a beloved coach at WHS, accepted a position at Austin College in Sherman, TX. Since Coach Morrison was so admired, Weatherford High School adopted the kangaroo as its mascot, inspired by his new school.
All schools in Weatherford ISD proudly display the kangaroo mascot, accompanied by school colors of Roo Blue and White.
