Welcome to Rhome, Texas! Established in the late 1850s by a group of settlers from Missouri, the town was initially known as Prairie Point. Located twelve miles southeast of Decatur in southeastern Wise County, Rhome sits at the crossroads of two stagecoach lines. In 1858, early settler Samuel Sheets began laying out and selling lots on his land near the crossroads.

That same year, a post office opened, and by the early 1860s, Prairie Point had grown to include a hotel, a school, and several businesses, making it the second-largest settlement in Wise County. However, during the Civil War, the area, defended only by a brigade of older men and young boys, became vulnerable to attacks from Indians and bandits. Notably, several prominent citizens and former residents, including the former community’s physician, Dr. Alfred McCarty, were involved in the Peace Party Conspiracy of 1862, which is linked to the Great Hanging at Gainesville. Following several midnight arrests and a trial in Decatur, five residents were executed.

The Unique History of Rhome

By 1863, Prairie Point was nearly deserted. In 1882, the Fort Worth and Denver City Railway laid tracks nearby, leading to the establishment of a new settlement named Rhome in 1883 in honor of Colonel Byron Crandall Rhome, a prominent local rancher credited with introducing the first Hereford cattle to Wise County. The Rhome post office was established the same year, and by the early 1890s, the town had grown to 175 residents, along with a school, a church, and two flour mills. 

Rhome is a proud member of Northwest ISD. The Northwest Independent School District (NISD) has no district-wide mascot. Each school within the district has its own unique mascot and colors. For example, Northwest High School is the "Texans," while Byron Nelson High School is the "Bobcats." Pike Middle School has updated its mascot to a "Panther," Hatfield Elementary is the "Cougars," Alan & Andra Perrin Elementary is the "Panthers," and Molly Livengood Carter Elementary is the "Coyotes."
