Alvord is a small town in Wise County that was originally named Nina until it adopted its current name in 1882, in honor of the president of the Fort Worth and Denver Railway Company. The town was officially incorporated in 1912. By 1925, Alvord had developed into a prosperous center for farmers, featuring a high school, an elementary school, four churches, a weekly newspaper, and a railroad stop. Although the Great Depression caused a decline in population, Alvord has experienced growth in recent years.

Settlement in Alvord began in the early 1880s. Initially known as Nina, the town was renamed Alvord in 1882 to honor the railway company president. A post office was established that same year, and the town was incorporated in 1912.
By the 1920s, Alvord had become a vibrant retail center for the surrounding agricultural community. It boasted a high school, an elementary school, multiple churches, a weekly newspaper, and a railroad stop.
The Great Depression had a significant impact on Alvord, leading to a decrease in the number of watermelon farms and livestock ranches in the area. As a result, the population dropped from 1,376 in 1925 to 821 in 1940.
