Alvord, TX

Alvord, TX

Welcome to Alvord, Texas! Alvord is a small town in Wise County that was originally named Nina until it adopted its current name in 1882, in honor of the president of the Fort Worth and Denver Railway Company. The town was officially incorporated in 1912. By 1925, Alvord had developed into a prosperous center for farmers, featuring a high school, an elementary school, four churches, a weekly newspaper, and a railroad stop. Although the Great Depression caused a decline in population, Alvord has experienced growth in recent years.

Alvord’s History

Settlement in Alvord began in the early 1880s. Initially known as Nina, the town was renamed Alvord in 1882 to honor the railway company president. A post office was established that same year, and the town was incorporated in 1912.

By the 1920s, Alvord had become a vibrant retail center for the surrounding agricultural community. It boasted a high school, an elementary school, multiple churches, a weekly newspaper, and a railroad stop.

The Great Depression had a significant impact on Alvord, leading to a decrease in the number of watermelon farms and livestock ranches in the area. As a result, the population dropped from 1,376 in 1925 to 821 in 1940.

Alvord: A Popular Place

Despite the decline during the Great Depression, Alvord has seen growth in recent years. The town now has a library, an excellent volunteer fire department, and a well-regarded school system. It also features numerous businesses, including a bank, local eateries, convenience stores, a grocery store, and a Dollar General store.

Alvord remains an important part of Wise County, which has its own rich history, including voting against secession during the Civil War and serving as a refugee camp in 1862.

Known for its natural beauty, Alvord is particularly close to the LBJ National Grasslands, which attracts campers, horseback riders, and hikers. The town is also recognized for its family-friendly atmosphere and the local wine industry, with wineries like Brushy Creek Vineyards and Marker Cellars Family Winery receiving international acclaim for their quality wines.

Alvord Independent School District (ISD) is a public school district based in Alvord, Texas. It is located in north central Wise County and extends into a small portion of southern Montague County.  The school mascot is the Bulldog, and Alvord is as proud of their Bulldogs as any other Texas small town.

Cleaner, Healthier Air for Your Family

Alvord’s rural location means exposure to outdoor allergens like pollen, agricultural dust, and seasonal mold. Without proper indoor air quality (IAQ) management, these contaminants can lead to poor air circulation and health issues such as allergies, respiratory irritation, and dry indoor air.

We offer comprehensive IAQ solutions, including:

  • Whole-home air purifiers
  • HEPA and media filtration systems
  • UV light air sanitation
  • Humidifiers and dehumidifiers
